Hi, I'm Mersey - I volunteer for the Choir With No Name Liverpool and am also lucky enough to MD the choir when our fabulous director Meike is away. I've been with the choir since its first days at the beginning of 2014 and could not have imagined then how significant it would become to me.
Volunteering is not something I'd done before but when I first found out about the choir and read about the organisation, I instantly knew I had to be involved. I'm not always comfortable in new situations with lots of people (so I really appreciate how some of our members must feel when they first come in!) but as soon as I walked in I felt immediately welcomed and part of a great team. 18 months later we are now a great big family and I look forward to walking into that room every week.
It has been amazing to watch our members grow in confidence over the last year and a half - people that I thought would never sing now standing confidently at the front and helping others with their parts, people who would shake when singing in front of people belting out solos in front of 1000 people and faces transforming from fear to joy. It is also incredible how much the sound of the choir has grown and improved, how much more confident people are with harmonies and more complicated arrangements and how much quicker we get at learning songs every week! I can't believe how far we've come in such a short time.
When I joined the choir, I hoped I could help people but I didn't realise how much of a difference the choir would make to me! I have met so many amazing people and made some great friends. I'm so grateful to be a part of it and look forward to many more energetic rehearsals, delicious meals (and cake!) and exciting gigs ahead!
