Birmingham World: Birmingham Festival 23 announces thrilling opening event for free Commonwealth Games legacy celebration

Brummies are invited to experience Once City A Thousand Memories - the thrilling night of free entertainment which will open Birmingham Festival 23, the 10 day event celebrating the legacy of the Commonwealth Games.

Centenary Square is set to be transformed into a giant open air festival to stage a wealth of talent from across the city and beyond on Friday, July 28. The free entertainment will continue daily until Sunday, August 6 with the full line being announced in coming weeks.

NME: Gaz Coombes teams up with choir involving people impacted by homelessness

Former Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes has released a live version of one of his singles, featuring a choir involving people impacted by homelessness.

Released on Tuesday (July 11), the singer joined forces with The Choir With No Name to record a live version of his single ‘Long Live The Strange’ — taken from his latest solo album ‘Turn The Car Around’.

Formed in 2008, the choir is a UK Charity which provides a safe singing community for those affected by homelessness, and offers support for those who face marginalisation because of their living circumstances.

The Big Issue: Watch Supergrass star Gaz Coombes’ new single with choir for homeless people

Since 2008, the Choir with No Name has harnessed the power of song to offer people impacted by homelessness a safe space where they can express themselves without being labelled or judged. Earlier this year, their Birmingham choir acquired a surprise guest member – Supergrass frontman and Mercury nominated solo artist Gaz Coombes.

Together, they recorded a live version of Coombes’s single, Long Live the Strange and filmed a music video which has been released on Coombes’s YouTube channel today. You can watch the video below. The single will also be hitting streaming services soon.

CLASH: Gaz Coombes Teams Up With The Choir With No Name

Gaz Coombes has shared a new version of ‘Long Live The Strange’.

The revered British songwriter recently completed another sold out nationwide tour, dipping into his evergreen catalogue. When Gaz Coombes visiting Birmingham, the team from The Choir With No Name sent him an invite.

The organisation run safe singing communities with people impacted by homelessness and marginalisation, and their Birmingham choir linked with Gaz Coombes. Inviting to join the venerable songwriter – and his band – at the Mill in Digbeth, a pre-gig run through saw the musicians radically alter his solo gem ‘Long Live The Strange’.
